Im actually surprised at how readable this book was. I was expecting a biography, and there were some biographical details, but it was primarily an assessment of Ferdinand Foch, who was one of the leaders of the French Army during WWI. The quote that inspired me to learn more about Foch (My right is driven in, my center is giving way, the situation is excellent, I attack.) sums up his general philosophy of warfare -- that victory is in the offense.

He came to this conclusion through studies of Napoleons military strategies. However, this approach was not successful during the early part of WWI and resulted in unnecessary casualties. Foch learned from these experiences and modified his approach later in the war.It was interesting to read about the early portion of WWI, which Americans tend to ignore because we were not yet involved. I was also fascinated with descriptions of the American general and troops and their shortcomings - its not a perspective we get to hear much.
